In search of the right tomato – openpomo.com, a FOSS implementaion for yet another Pomodoro app

It’s March 15 and I think it’s that time of the year to start another FOSS project. It all began by me searching for a free multi-platform always in sync pomodoro app. There are some strong candidates, not FOSS of course. In this blog post I’ll take a look at them and explain why I started openpomo.com.

The problem with the current market is simple: the good apps lock essential features—like basic data export or cross-device syncing—behind subscriptions. The free ones are either abandoned, lack multi-platform support, or are riddled with ads. None of them give you full ownership of your data or the freedom to inspect the code.

I just wanted a tool that works everywhere without exploiting my attention or wallet.

So, I’m building it. OpenPomo is going to be a 100% free, AGPLv3-licensed focus timer with native automatic sync across desktop, mobile, and web. No paywalls, no tracking. Just deep work.

The initial landing page is officially live today at openpomo.com. It’s just a barebones MkDocs site on Cloudflare right now, but the foundation is set. Next up: finding a solution to have a sync engine, the best framework for the multi-platfrom apps and writing a SRS doc with the simple essential features to get started!
